Harz brown trout

Concept for an interactive projector installation with fiducial tracking in vvvv

The museum concept 'Harzer Bachforelle'

(Harz brown trout) includes an interactive projector installation with fiducial tracking, which provides information about Wernigerode's heraldic fish,

the brown trout, in a playful way.

How it works

A projector casts an image onto a table, which changes depending on the interaction: when the components are moved the display fades in new information and actions. The core of the installation is 'fiducial tracking', which uses the software 'vvvv' to track the movement of 'fiducial markers'. Depending on the position and rotation of the markers different scenarios are triggered, such as showing information about the animal, different stages of the fish's development, an animation of the outlines of Wernigerode's coat of arms or an animation of the fish itself in abstracted graphics.

Regional relations

The research for information on the brown trout also relied on cooperation with the Harz National Park and the association 'Wildfisch- und Gewässerschutz 1985 Wernigerode e.V.' to ensure that the thematic content about the animal remained accurate. The installation was designed for the Wernigerode museum 'Schiefes Haus'.

Team

The project was developed in a team of 4 people as part of the 'Museums- und Ausstellungskonzepte (M.A.)' course. While the concept design took place in the group, we later split up into more specific tasks. My work included project management, programming the patch in vvvv, which works with visual scripting, and documentation.
